Google I/O
Reinvention

Foundational Experience

Led by EMÁJYN’s founder during his tenure as Head of Creative at Superfly.

The Context

Google’s I/O Developer Conference is one of the most important gatherings in the technology industry, bringing together thousands of developers to explore the tools and platforms shaping the future of software.

For years the event had been held inside traditional convention centers. While successful, the environment reflected the standard format of technology conferences — functional, contained, and largely transactional.

The opportunity was to rethink the event from the ground up and create an experience that better reflected the creativity, optimism, and cultural influence of the global developer community on the world.

The Provocation

Developers are often portrayed as isolated technicians working behind screens. But in reality they are the architects of the digital age, shaping how billions of people communicate, learn, and experience the world.

If Google believed developers were creative pioneers at the forefront of culture, the environment surrounding the conference should reflect that idea.

The Experience

The conference was reimagined as a fully immersive outdoor gathering at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View.

The event moved beyond the traditional convention center model and became an open-air campus of custom environments, transforming temporary structures into bold architectural forms filled with color, light, and interaction.

By day, the conference maintained its technical rigor through keynotes, product announcements, developer labs, and hands-on demonstrations. By night, the environment evolved into a celebration of technology and culture, featuring large-scale installations, interactive environments, and live performances.

The result was an experience that felt less like a conference and more like a festival of innovation — reflecting the creativity and imagination of the global developer community.

Leadership & Impact

As Head of Creative at Superfly, EMÁJYN’s founder helped guide the conceptual direction for the reimagined event and oversaw the creative execution of the experience.

The transformation of Google I/O marked a significant shift in how technology gatherings could be designed — moving from transactional conference formats toward immersive environments that celebrate both innovation and community.

Why It Matters

Google I/O demonstrated that when the identity of a community is reframed, the environments built around it can reshape how that community is perceived. By presenting developers as creative cultural forces rather than simply technical specialists, the event helped elevate the role of developers within the broader technology landscape.

That belief, that great experience design can reframe a community's perception, inside and out, continues to inform EMÁJYN’s philosophy today.
